A lot of people have pointed out to me that, if you watch the entire JJ Abrams interview with Jon Stewart, he goes on to talk about how much he came to love Star Trek as an adult, and that the viewer is left with the impression that he truly gets what Star Trek is about.

I didn’t watch the whole interview, but just saw the gifset that I reblogged. I stand by what I said: the whole point of Star Trek is that it’s about more than aliens and robots and cool space battles. Star Trek is unique in science fiction — certainly science fiction on television in the 1960s — in that it was always about something more than phasers and transporters and Captain Kirk using his fists and his wits to defeat hostile aliens before he nailed the green alien lady of the week.

When I worked on JJ’s first Trek movie, I got the impression that he genuinely loved Star Trek, and really got what it was all about. I should have watched the entire interview before I pulled out my Jump To Conclusions mat, and I regret that I didn’t. I hope anyone who was upset at me or drew the same erroneous conclusion I did understands that I care deeply about Star Trek, and sometimes my heart gets ahead of my brain where it’s concerned.

Wil Wheaton, more people need to be like you.

The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

This just… hurts.

This reminds me of all the executives being hired to run YouTube networks who probably couldn’t name more than one YouTube channel.

You know, something that is making me sad and angry is people’s ability to check up on facts. This interview took place May 13th, 2013. I feel like nobody else even watched this interview in full! Do you really thing that the director of TWO Star Trek movies doesn’t get Star Trek?! It would appear that some are quick to judge. And what do we Nerdfighters say? “Imagine me complexly?” Imagine him, as a child, like he said, first encountering Star Trek. It was over his head. Congrats to everyone who instantly loved it, you were way more philosophically developed than JJ or I was when we first saw Star Trek. He had to be a little bit older to appreciate the philosophy behind it.

And the thing about the producing partner is that you just need to be invested in the PEOPLE that are working on your movie, NOT the content itself. You have to want to facilitate OTHER’S love of the work and make sure they have what they need to make the best movie they can. Yes, it is a plus if a producer has a passion for the content, but on a project that big, you can bet that there are plenty of people that aren’t as into it as a fan would/should be. It’s just a JOB to them. And that can be ok, as long as the product is good.

Honestly, the first new Star Trek movie got me into the TV series. So cool down, please. It has brought life into an old franchise (cough Doctor Who, Sherlock cough). Sometimes I don’t get why nerds/geeks/trekkies get so exclusionary so quickly. Oh wait, yes I do. Because we genuinely love stories and we don’t want to see them change because that change could destroy everything we love about them (cough Doctor Who cough).

Also, more cynically, it’s the movie business, not the movie arts. It’s there to make money, bottom line. Sorry. That’s why you get shit like Fast and Furious 4,348 and Transformers clones, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

But hey, everything is going to be fine. Because we get to stare at Benedryl Cuddlebunny and Chris (Wish I Was A Beaver So I Could Chomp On Some) Pine for just over 2 hours. This is still Tumblr, right? We appreciate fine men just like fine wine, right?
